OASIS OVERVIEW
The OASIS Program directed by Dr. Betty J. Stewart-Fullwood , provides support and enrichment services to all first generation and/or underrepresented University of Florida students. In addition, OASIS provides the primary academic support services to approximately 150-400 incoming freshmen each year who are carefully selected by the Office of Admissions for participation in the AIM Program. These services provide students with the academic and social skills necessary to reach their full potential and graduate from the University of Florida. OASIS works in conjunction with several integral offices including the Offices of Admissions, Dean of Students, the Office of Academic Technology, Student Financial Affairs, Housing and Residence Education, AIM and the Academic Advisement Center, to offer a thorough introduction and orientation to UF. Preview sessions for Summer B 2009 will held June 25th-June 26th. Stay tuned for summer 2009 schedule of activities.
Supportive services offered or arranged include academic workshops and learning experiences which cover such topics as study skills, time management, career planning, library skills, stress management and test anxiety. Other services provided are student assemblies/information sessions, academic progress monitoring , tutoring and advocacy. These activities are designed to facilitate first generation and/or underrepresented generation students' successful negotiation of any and all processes of the University of Florida and to stimulate their use of and participation in resources and activities that enhance academic progress.
A cadre of trained peer Mentors comprises the frontline contacts for these students. These Peer-Tutor Mentors assist students in making a smooth transition to the university environment. This relationship begins during the summer and continues throughout the freshman academic year. Peer-Tutor Mentors help students to develop coping and social adjustment skills by providing a positive association with successful peers and role models. The OASIS staff establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with the parents of enrolled students and actively encourages their involvement with their student's college career.
All University of Florida first generation and/or underrepresented students, as well as participants in AIM are eligible to participate in academic workshops and learning experiences which cover such topics as study skills, time management, career planning, library skills, stress management, motivation and test anxiety.
