A cadre of trained peer counselors comprises the frontline contacts for these students. These Peer-Tutor Counselors assist students in making a smooth transition to the university environment. This relationship begins during the summer term for AIM students and continues throughout the freshman academic year. Peer-Tutor Counselors help students to develop coping and social adjustment skills by providing a positive association with successful peers and role models. The SESP staff establishes and maintains a cooperative relationship with the parents of enrolled students and actively encourages their involvement with their student's college career. All CLAS first generation and/or underrepresented students, as well as participants in AIM are eligible to participate in academic workshops and learning experiences which cover such topics as study skills, time management, career planning, library skills, stress management, motivation and test anxiety. These services are provided throughout the undergraduate career for all CLAS first generation and/or underrepresented students and throughout the freshman year for all AIM participants. The success of the program is reflected in the students' high rate of retention and academic achievement over the past 20 years. All SESP services are free .
